2. Servers and terminals
3. Smartphones, digital cameras, e-book readers and
portable
4. Game devices
5. Embedded computers
Desktops And
Mobile Computers
Ø
Personal computer (PC)
= A computer that can perform all of its input, processing, output, and storage
activities by itself and is intended to be used by one person at a time
Ø
Mobile
computer = A portable personal computer, designed so that a
user easily can carry it from place to place
Ø
Desktop, or desktop computer = A personal computer designed to be in a
stationary location, where all of its components fit on or under a desk or
table
Ø
Laptop, also called a notebook computer = A thin, lightweight
mobile computer with a screen in its lid and a keyboard in its base
Ø
Tablet = A thin, lightweight mobile
computer that has a touch screen
Ø
Handheld computer = A computer
small enough to fit in one hand
Ø
Server = A computer dedicated to
providing one or more services to other computers or devices on a network (Rack
server, blade server, tower server
Server VS
Supercomputer
SERVER
|
SUPERCOMPUTER
|
Serves bits and bytes of data that enter and leave
the server
|
Regular
hardware combined in enormous proportions
|
Web
servers-processing requests from surfers and sending them back data
|
Contain so
many processors
|
Web browsers - assemble that data to
generate Web pages
|
Predict
the weather, build airplanes, model the brain and simulate the way the planet
works.
|
Server send files in a network
|
Sequoia Blue
Gene/Q supercomputer processing 504 billion events per second(2013) ≈1
million desktop computers.
|
Terminals
A terminal is
a computer, usually with limited processing power, that enables users to send
data to and/or receive information from a server, or host computer. Most retail
stores use a point of sale (POS) terminal to record purchases, process credit
or debit cards, and update inventory.
A self-service kiosk is a freestanding terminal
that usually has a touch screen for user interaction.

Game Devices
1) Game console = A mobile computing device designed
for single-player or multiplayer video games
2) Handheld game device = A small mobile device that
contains a screen, speakers, controls, and game console all in one unit
Embedded
Computers
A special-purpose computer
that functions as a component in a larger product
·
Consumer electronics
·
Home automation devices
·
Automobiles
·
Computer devices and office machines
Ports and Connections
Ports and Connections
USB port = Short for universal serial bus port, can connect
up to 127 different peripheral devices together with a single connector
Protecting Hardware
v Surge
protector = Uses electrical components
to provide a stable current flow and minimize the chances of an overvoltage
reaching the computer and other electronic equipment
v Uninterruptible
power supply (UPS) = A device that
contains surge protection circuits and one or more batteries that can provide
power during a temporary or permanent loss of power.
